Hate crimes

Hate crime is a criminal offence committed on account of a person's race, skin colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. Unless a more severe punishment is explicitly prescribed by the Criminal Code, such conduct is considered an aggravating circumstance.

Gender-based violence against women means violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately. Unless a more severe punishment is explicitly prescribed by the Criminal Code, such conduct is considered an aggravating circumstance.
