Memorandum of Understanding on fight against cybercrime signed by USA and Croatia
The Republic of Croatia and the United States of America have signed a Memorandum that will ensure better cooperation and exchange of information in the field of transnational cybercrime.
Šibenik, May 22 – In the framework of the International Cybercrime Summit held in Šibenik on 22 and 23 May 2023, the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration, the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia and the Embassy of the United States of America (on behalf of the United States) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of fighting cybercrime.The Memorandum will ensure that its participants cooperate more effectively and closely in tackling cybercrime, especially in transnational cases.
“The Memorandum of Understanding represents a significant step forward in improving the system of monitoring and prosecuting cybercrime-related offences. It is also a confirmation of the partnership between the Republic of Croatia and the United States of America. Transnational cybercrime is one of the biggest modern day challenges. Technology is rapidly changing, and with it also the structure of crime. It is necessary for countries to keep up with the changes to trace crime. An effective fight against cybercrime is based on knowing the structure of criminals, monitoring trends in the IT sector and taking swift and effective measures. The Memorandum signed is a new instrument aimed at fighting cybercrime more effectively and strengthening cyber security within the national security system", said Minister Malenica.
Speaking on behalf of the US Embassy in Croatia, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Amy Davison said that the Memorandum represents a strong commitment by the United States to work with their allies on a global scale to improve cyber security and effectively combat cybercrime. She added that the partnership between the United States and Croatian institutions – the police and the State Attorney’s Office as well as the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration was excellent, highlighting the United States' recognition of Croatia’s key role in the fight against cybercrime in Southeast Europe".
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Minister of Justice and Public Administration Ivan Malenica on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration, the State Attorney General Zlata Hrvoj-Šipek on behalf of the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia and the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Amy Davison on behalf of the US Embassy in Zagreb.
The Southeastern European Cybercrime Summit, organised by the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice and the US State Department, is being held in Šibenik on 22 and 23 May 22.
The conference has brought together leading experts from public prosecutor’s offices, police, cyber security centres and judicial institutions of the United States and Southeast European countries.
