List of competent authorities under Artificial Inteligence Act notified
The Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation has notified the European Commission, through the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Croatia to the EU in Brussels, of the competent authorities in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 (Artificial Intelligence Act).
The AI Act, which has entered into force, sets harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, and its application, with the prescribed exceptions, will start from 2 August 2026.
Under Article 77(2) of the AI Act, Member States were required to designate and publish by 2 November 2024 the list of public authorities or bodies competent for the supervision and enforcement of obligations relating to the protection of fundamental rights when using high-risk AI systems.
The list is notified to the European Commission and other Member States and will be updated regularly.
In accordance with this obligation, the Republic of Croatia has designated the following bodies as competent authorities:
- Ombudswoman of the Republic of Croatia,
- Ombudswoman for Children,
- Ombudswoman for Gender Equality,
- Ombudswoman for Persons with Disabilities,
- Personal Data Protection Agency,
- State Electoral Commission, and
- Agency for Electronic Media, Head of Legal and Personnel Department.
This step ensures the compliance of the Republic of Croatia with Union law and contributes to the protection of citizens' fundamental rights in the context of the development and application of artificial intelligence.
