6th International Criminal Justice Summer Course

The topics of this year’s Summer Course were related to mental health, with a focus on resilience in criminal justice settings.

In the period from 2 to 5 July 2024, the Criminal Justice Platform Europe (CPJE) with the support of the Centre for Legal Studies and Specialised Training (Centre d'Estudis Jurídics and Formació Especialitzada - CEJFE) organised the 6th edition of the International Criminal Justice Summer Course in Barcelona, Catalonia, entitled “Towards Resilience in Criminal Justice. Organisation - Staff - Client”. 

The Criminal Justice Platform Europe (CPJE) includes three network organisations active in the field of probation (CEP), prison system (EuroPris) and restorative justice (EFRJ).

The Summer Course consisted of plenary sessions, three parallel workshops and study visits. The aim was to examine key practice issues, inspire new thinking, encourage mutual cooperation and build new networks to improve services and practice in prisons, probation and restorative justice. The topics addressed by the Summer Course are closely related to mental health, focusing on resilience in criminal justice settings. The topics of the three workshops were organisational resilience, staff resilience and client’s resilience. Each workshop looked at key challenges and offered ways to build capacities on the different levels.

The workshop on staff resilience was moderated by Croatia’s Iva Prskalo, Senior Adviser at the Department for Psychological Support to Prison and Probation Officials, Directorate for Prison System and Probation of the Ministry. The workshops were attended by over 50 participants from different European backgrounds and beyond, which contributed to a wealth of opportunities for learning and widening perspectives.
