Women in Digital
On Thursday, 4 December 2025, another edition of the ‘Women in Digital’ event was held at the Cultural Multimedia Centre in Bjelovar
It is an event intended for senior secondary school girls, which allows them to hear first-hand the experiences of women from the IT industry, with the aim to encourage girls to consider STEM areas in choosing their future education and profession. On behalf of the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, the students were welcomed by the Acting Head of Digital Competence Development Sector, Ms Lidija Suman, who pointed out the persisting prejudices and stereotypes of dividing professions into ‘male’ and ‘female’. Such prejudices were also present in STEM fields, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, where the share of women was still lower than that of men, which is why the trend was not only characteristic for Croatia, but also for the entire European Union, as confirmed by the European Parliament's Report on promoting gender equality in STEM education and careers.
‘Therefore, this Government continues to strongly support women’s participation in the digital sector. Already in 2019, we signed the Women in Digital Declaration and committed to creating equal opportunities and encouraging women to actively participate in the digital society’, said Suman.
In Croatia, the implementation of the Declaration was coordinated by the then Central State Office for the Digital Society Development, and today this mandate is implemented by the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation.
‘Events such as this one are very commendable because there are still very few women in IT and I would personally like us all to encourage future generations of young girls and female professionals to try their hand at the IT industry and to understand how many colorful jobs we can do, because IT is not just programming’, said one of the speakers, Ms Kaja Pavlinić Popović, COO of Speck agency.
The event brought together several other eminent speakers, women from the digital technology industry: Nataša Glavor from the company Span, Meri Tukač Ofak from the software company Infobip, Tea Ergović from the company Rimac Technology and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Martina Kutija and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Martina Antonić from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) in Zagreb.
Today, careers in the IT and ICT sectors bring many benefits for women, from professional development to flexibility, including the possibility of teleworking, which makes it easier to balance between career and family life.
The inclusion of women in the digital world is not only a matter of equality, but an opportunity for society, the economy and technology to thrive.
