State Secretary Ivan Crnčec was leading the Croatian delegation at the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, held at UN Headquarters in New York

The delegation included State Secretary Margareta Mađerić, human rights expert Dubravka Šimonović, Professor at the Department of Criminal Law of the Faculty of Law in Zagreb Maja Munivrana and representatives of several civil society organizations.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the main global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to promoting gender equality, women’s rights and empowerment, established by a resolution of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In his address to the Commission, the State Secretary spoke about the ensuring and strengthening of access to justice for all women and girls. He pointed out that the fight against gender-based violence and violence against women was among Croatia’s main priorities, and in the past few years the legal framework had been strengthened, including by introducing a special criminal offence of aggravated murder of a female person (femicide). It was of utmost importance to work on prevention in order to avoid violence and its tragic consequences, he stressed.

As part of the Commission on the Status of Women, Croatia organised a side event on the protection of women and girls from cyber violence, attended by GREVIO President Maria-Andriani Kostopoulou.

Cyber violence has emerged as a rapidly growing form of gender-based violence and this side event was taken as an opportunity to exchange experiences and present effective national and international practices in prevention, protection of victims and criminal justice responses to this form of violence.
