Minister of Justice and Public Administration Ivan Malenica met on Monday 21 August with Greek Justice Minister Georgios Floridis in Athens and visited Croatian nationals in the Chalkida Prison.

The ministers discussed judicial cooperation, the possibility of enforcing monitoring measures in Croatia, the deportation of arrested Croatian nationals as well as their safety in Greek prisons.

Minister Malenica condemned the fan violence and hooliganism and expressed the readiness of the Croatian authorities to cooperate with the Greek authorities. He reiterated that the Republic of Croatia, respecting the independence of the Greek judiciary, expects the investigation to shed light on all the circumstances of the fan riots, and that suspects are ensured the right to a fair trial and all the rights under the European Convention on Human Rights while deprived of liberty.

As part of his official visit to Greece, the Minister visited seven Croatian nationals in the Chalkida Prison. The arrested nationals visited by the Minister had no objections to the accommodation and treatment in prison. The prison administration vouched for the safety of those arrested.

Ahead of the bilateral meeting with the Greek Minister of Justice, Minister Malenica participated in a meeting between Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
