The Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation would like to honour all women on this day, which serves as an important reminder of the challenges faced by women and their achievements throughout history and in modern society

The role of women in our society is immensely important and as such must be recognised by all institutions and individuals. Equality between women and men in today's world has become a moral imperative and an important standard that calls for the responsibility of all stakeholders to strive to ensure equal opportunities, rights and obligations for both genders.

The Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, as part of the executive branch of government, strives to contribute to a fairer and more inclusive society in all the areas in which it can exert its influence, especially when it comes to the position of women in society.

Empowered by the European Union's initiatives for gender equality that have resulted in legislative changes, inter alia, this Ministry has been engaged at various levels in enabling equal participation of women in social and political life. In particular, the Ministry has taken significant steps to provide quality and effective frameworks for protection from violence against women, which, despite all the efforts made so far, has still not been eradicated.

Joint efforts towards gender equality

In addition to amendments to the package of laws strengthening the protection of women victims of violence and tightening penalties for gender-based violence, recent amendments to the Companies Act have also introduced solutions from the EU Directive on improving the gender balance among directors of listed companies, with the aim of ensuring the application of the principle of equal opportunities for women and men in top management positions in large companies.

Women are also encouraged to play an active role in the digital society in order to achieve gender equality in IT. In April 2019, Croatia signed the Women in Digital Declaration together with other EU Member States and Norway.

In Croatia, the implementation of the Declaration at national level is coordinated by the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation in cooperation with the Government Office for Gender Equality.

Furthermore, provisions have been enacted in civil service legislation to improve the situation of pregnant women and women who use maternity and parental benefits, and gender equality is one of the fundamental principles underlying this regulation.

The Ministry itself is an institution in which women are strongly represented in different positions. The share of women in the total number of employees is 60 %, while the share of women in management positions in the Ministry is 67 %.

In the justice system (courts and state attorney's offices), the share of women in the total number of employees exceeds 2/3, both among judicial officials and among civil servants and employees.

When it comes to civil service as a whole, the share of women is 52 %.

Striving to make gender equality a standard and not just a goal in the coming period, the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation will continue to advocate and promote women's rights in all spheres in which it can contribute.

The Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation wishes all women a Happy Women's Day!
