State Secretary Fadila Bahović presented the draft Mediation Act aimed at more frequent use of mediation

At today's session of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, a Proposal for a new Mediation Act was presented, which would completely replace the current Act on the Peaceful Resolution of Disputes.

‘The courts still face a significant caseload. Therefore, in order to further encourage mediation as a way of resolving disputes that can contribute to reducing the caseload, a new Mediation Act is proposed", explained State Secretary Bahović.

The new regulation will secure conditions for informing citizens and businesses about the benefits of resolving disputes through mediation, encourage more frequent use of mediation and consequently reduce the number of cases in courts.

This legal proposal introduces a mandatory attempt at mediation before initiating civil proceedings in small claims and inheritance proceedings.

It also further strengthens the Mediation Centre, which now continues to operate as the National Mediation Centre. The Centre has its registered office in Zagreb as well as branches in Rijeka, Split and Osijek, which ensures the territorial coverage of the whole of Croatia.

The information session and mediation with mediation officers will be available free of charge at the National Mediation Centre.
