AI in the Judiciary: Enhancing Court Decision Publishing While Safeguarding Privacy and Enhancing Transparency
On 13 June 2025, a Workshop on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Judiciary: Enhancing court decision publishing while safeguarding privacy and enhancing transparency” was organised by the Council of Europe in Ptuj, Slovenia
The Council of Europe facilitated exchanges with Slovenian judges, who showcased the tools currently available to the judiciary and discussed their attitudes towards the use of AI in daily judicial work. The Slovenian Supreme Court President welcomed the discussions. The President of the Supreme Court of Sweden presented innovative projects from his country, highlighting both the benefits and challenges of AI, particularly in publishing judicial decisions.Representatives from Croatia, from the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation shared Croatia’s experience, developed in cooperation with the Council of Europe under the “Digital by Default” project. They explained how ownership of court decisions was restored and full transparency in their publication was enabled.
Slovenia is in the final stages of implementing greater automation for anonymising and publishing court decisions, drawing on examples from other judiciaries. Participants engaged in fruitful discussions on applying AI to replace manual tasks, while ensuring critical human oversight is maintained.
The workshop brought together 35 participants, including Presidents and Deputy Presidents from courts across Slovenia, as well as representatives from other member states.
