Croatia’s efforts to strengthen the rule of law recognised

On Thursday 11 June, Minister Damir Habijan received Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection

They discussed the Rule of Law Report for the Republic of Croatia, which recognised Croatia's efforts in strengthening the rule of law, the efficiency of the judiciary, the adoption of anti-corruption regulations and the protection of journalists. It was pointed out that recent legislative reforms have incorporated the key recommendations of the European Commission, in particular in the area of speeding up court proceedings in commercial and civil matters, the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act and the USKOK Act, and the recommendation relating to SLAPP lawsuits (Strategic lawsuits against public participation).

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust) and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and their improvements, including through a possible revision of the relevant Regulations. The Croatian side stressed its strong support for these bodies, which play a significant role in the fight against serious cross-border and organised crime and the protection of the EU's financial interests.
