Croatia launches procedure to sign UN Convention against Cybercrime

On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, at the 180th session of the Government, State Secretary Ivan Crnčec presented a Proposal for a Decision to initiate the procedure for joining the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime

The Decision accepts the text of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, which strengthens international cooperation in the field of combating certain criminal offences committed through information and communication technology systems and in the field of exchange of evidence of serious criminal offences in electronic form.

State Secretary Crnčec said the Convention's purpose was to prevent cybercrime more effectively and to better cooperate in the fight against cybercrime globally, recalling that it had been adopted in 2024 and was open for signature until the end of 2026.

‘The Republic of Croatia supported the initiative for the adoption of the Convention and monitored the work on its adoption through the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the Ad Hoc Committee’, stressed the State Secretary.

So far, 77 countries have signed it, of which 14 are members of the European Union and three have ratified it. On behalf of the European Union, the Convention was signed in October last year.

The adoption of the Decision will authorise the Minister of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation to sign the Convention on behalf of Croatia.

The implementation of the Convention will not require the allocation of additional financial resources in the state budget of the Republic of Croatia or the adoption of new or amendments to existing laws.
